The specification for this job was to trim a privet hedge and start to shape it. The hedge hadn’t had any work done on it in quite a while.
This initial cut was to maintain the height & encourage growth at the base, which was starting to regress. I shaped hedge so that it tapered out wider at the base. Thus more light could reach the bottom & maintain a healthy plant. This meant that the bottom of the hedge was a slightly ‘looser’ cut, which would thicken out in time.
I cut the rest of the hedge ‘tightly’ taking the regrowth right back. This encourages the privet plant to sprout more shoots & in time a dense hedge is formed.
My client was delighted with the finished result and she has asked me back ever since to maintain her hedge.
Point to note: a privet hedges take time to reshape, often over several years to get the desired result.
